So I was going to pick up Slicing but....

So I've been reading up here and there about professions in SWTOR and had read on this the /r/SWTOR thread "Give up treasure hunting for slicing?" that Slicing was a great first profession to use. "OK" I thought, "that much at least is settled." Not so fast it appears.

Reading on the thread "How to make slicing a real profession." from yesterday on the SWTOR forums it appears that Slicing has been nerfed (See SWTOR 1.0.1 Patch Notes 12/27/2011). Now granted, I don't even know what the hell "Slicing" is exactly it is funny to already be hearing such contradictory information so early in the life of the game. Read on after the jump.

Who knows

Now I chalk most of what we are seeing up to being an MMO just getting started. Often things like over-performing professions aren't really balanced out until long after the MMO is released. That said I really need to just play the game and see how I do regardless of the professions I choose.

I was just hoping to get a bit of a "leg up" on learning the SWTOR economy. I also know that places like reddit and the SWTOR forums are full of players opinions and any of the above mentioned players could be completely full of crap.

Blind leading the blind

The fact that I am now just barely picking up my first professions means I don't have a lot of experience to draw upon in this area. Hopefully as time goes on I will start to get a better feel for what the best ways to make credits in SWTOR may be.

Until then I'll have to rely on here-say I pick up from around the SWTOR community. Now I'm off to pick my first profession. Wish me luck. If you have a recommendation for a great credit-making early profession let me know.

PS, Just as a side note because I'm near the trainers, more for me than anyone else, here are all the professions:

Gathering Professions:
  • Archaeology
  • Bioalanysis
  • Scavenging
  • Slicing.

"Mission" Professions (whatever that means.):
  • Diplomacy
  • Investigation
  • Underworld Trading
  •  Treasure Hunting

Crafting Professions
  • Artifice
  • Biochem
  • Cybertech
  • Synthweaving
  • Armstech
  • Armortech

And guess what? I went with slicing anyway and have already sent my trusty companion Vette on two missions to go get me stuff. Interesting. Imma be rich! Now to find the dreaded GTN.

PPS, BioWare sent me an email when I reached level 10 (which reminded me of the old defunct Azeroth Adviser) which was very helpful. In it they offered a few professions that might be helpful to my class.

That sent me to a page for level 10 Sith Warriors which recommended Artifice (for lightsaber-y stuff) and Synthweaving (robes and such) and also gave me a link to the Crew Skills page which I really should read. This info is out there I just need to look more into it.

Took Synthweaving but decided to learn Artifice instead. Learned how to unlearn a Crew Skill (Look for a little "x" to the right under the skill level bar on your crew skill window.) Also guess I'll want to pick up Archaeology since that seems to be the gathering skill for Artifice.
